Amami Airport (Amami Airport, Kagoshima Prefecture) is an international airport located in the southwestern part of Amami Oshima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Construction of the airport began in 1962 and it was officially opened in 1965 as the first international airport in Japan. The airport is located in the southwestern part of Amamioshima Island, about 20 km from Amami City, the central city of Kagoshima Prefecture, and about 50 km from Kagoshima City, the largest city in Kagoshima Prefecture. The airport has a 2.7 km long runway that can accommodate the takeoff and landing of large passenger aircraft. The airport can receive about 1,000 flights per day, most of which are domestic flights and a few international flights.
